Ceremonies and local Day of Service events are taking place locally and throughout the country in observance of the Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday today. For example, the City of North Adams Day of Service today has residents taking part in service projects around the city including at the Louison House, YMCA, Adams Youth Center, Friendship Food Pantry, Goodwill Industries and Williamstown First Congregational Church. The town of Great Barrington is using the occasion to also observe the Birthday of its most famous citizen, civil rights leader and activist, W.E.B. DuBois. A huge celebration kicks off today and runs through February 23rd. MLK Day began today with an interface service at the First Congregational Church on Main Street.

MLK Jr. Day is a National holiday. Government offices and the courts are closed today. Banks are closed and the U.S. Stock Market is closed as well. Schools at all grade levels are closed today. Some businesses and institutions are closed today, but others are open. Shopping smalls and other retail stores and business are mostly open today. If you are expecting a package from UPS or FedEx today, you’re in luck. Those services make deliveries on MLK Day, but the U.S. Postal Service does not deliver mail. Locally, the Berkshire Regional Transit Authority is not running buses today.
