Cam Newton’s Incentive Based Contract
According to a report by Field Yates of ESPN if Cam Newton can stay on the field for the Patriots this season, he can earn some cash. The 1-year deal with the Pats calls for a base salary of $1.05 million.
Much of his incentive laden contract is weighted towards his playing time. Cam can make an additional $3.75 million in playing-time incentives and up to $7.5 million if the Pats win the Superbowl.
According to Yates, Newton’s base is $1.05 million with $550,000 guaranteed. He will make $43,750 each game he is active, up to $700,000. Playing-time incentives maxes out at $3.75 million if he active for 90% of the time and the Patriots make the playoffs. For every playoff win playing at least 50% of the time will earn him $250,000 for each win.
If he is recognized by the league with a visit to the “Pro Bowl” he’ll get a check for $500,000. If he’s “All Pro” he’ll cash another $500,000 bonus.
Newtown was the #1 pick in the 2011 NFL Draft by the Carolina Panthers. Once a backup to Tim Tebow at the University of Florida he later transferred to Auburn University where they won the BCS National Championship in 2010 and earned Newtown the Heisman Trophy.
In his first year in the NFL he broke all-time NFL rookie records for rushing and passing yards and became the first quarterback to throw for 400 yards in his first game as a pro. He was the first rookie QB to throw for 4,000 yards in a season.
The Patriots will have a totally new-look offence this season if Newton wins the starting job in replacing Tom Brady. Brady is a pocket quarterback with little running ability...just the opposite of Cam Newton who is both a passing and running threat.
Newton has been plagued with an injury to his shoulder and foot in recent years with Carolina. If Cam can stay healthy can earn not only extra money with the Patriots, but earn a great deal of respect thought the NFL. After already earning over $120 million in the league, Cam has stated it's about respect not money.
Patriots games can be heard in the Berkshires on 1420 AM WBEC and 1230 WNAW.
