No Swimming at Berkshire County Pond for the Next Couple of Days

Summertime means boating, fishing, and swimming. I've always been a big fan of swimming in waterfalls, lakes, and ponds in the Berkshires. Since I was a kid, I would try to seek out the coldest places to swim with my dad. I would swim in waterfalls like Bellevue and Peck's (both in Adams), Cold River in Chalemont, and even Wahconah Falls in Dalton. Of course, swimming is no longer permitted at Wahconah Falls, but back when I was a youngster, you could swim there, and talk about cold water- that checked all of the boxes for me.

A Berkshire County Pond Will Have Some Restrictions Over the Next Few Days and Longer for Other Activities

Speaking of swimming in Berkshire County, Richmond Pond will suspend swimming, boating, and fishing from Thursday, July 16, 2026, through Friday, July 17, 2026.

Why are Restrictions on Summer Activities Happening at Richmond Pond?

The reason for the temporary restrictions is that the Pond will undergo chemical treatment on Thursday, July 16, 2026, to control the growth of nuisance aquatic vegetation, according to IBerkshires.com. There will be a longer restriction on using the pond water for irrigation purposes, which is prohibited until August 29, 2026. Some fun facts about Richmond Pond are that it spans approximately 228 acres in Pittsfield and Richmond, with about 40% of the Pond located in Pittsfield. The basin has a maximum depth of 54 feet with an average depth of 12.7 feet. For monitoring purposes, the deepest part is referred to as the ‘deep hole’.
