A Snow Emergency Remains In Effect In Pittsfield Through Tuesday
The Berkshire was hit with a new blast of winter weather overnight into Monday morning, blanketing the county with upward of at least 5 inches of snow depending on elevation.
It looked like about 5 inches of snow as I made my morning commute, which took quite a bit longer than normal due to city streets that, despite the clean-up crews' best efforts, were hard to keep up with apparently. With more snow expected to fall, the City of Pittsfield will keep a snow emergency in effect until Tuesday evening.
You will want to get an earlier start today if your commute is still upcoming. Many people don't have to go out today due to the Martin Luther King Jr. Day Holiday, so traffic should at least be lessened throughout the day.
A winter storm warning also remains in effect until 10 PM for Berkshire County.
The snow emergency in Pittsfield remains in effect until Tuesday, 7 PM.
Here are the details you need to know...
For the duration of the snow emergency, which covers the period of snowfall as well as the time required for the city to clean up and treat the streets after the storm ends, residents are asked to use off-street parking. If off-street parking is not available, residents may park on the street observing the following alternate side parking regulations:
- Between 7 p.m. today and 7 p.m. on Tuesday: vehicles may park on the odd side of the street
- Residents in and around downtown Pittsfield are encouraged to use the McKay Street parking garage for overnight parking which will be open to the public free of charge starting today through the duration of the emergency.
- All other existing and signed parking regulations remain active.
Non-permitted vehicles are prohibited from parking or standing in any open municipal parking lot between the hours of 12 a.m. and 7 a.m.
Vehicles found in violation of the above parking regulations may be towed at the vehicle owner’s expense. Additionally, trash collection for Monday, Jan. 17th, will be canceled.
Additional important information:
Trash collection for this week will be delayed one day. City residents are further advised that sidewalks and ramps abutting their property must be cleared of snow within 24-hours of the storm’s end. As a reminder, it is a violation of city ordinance to plow or otherwise dispose of snow from their property onto city streets and sidewalks. Residents are also encouraged to clear snow from around fire hydrants located near their properties.
