Baby Names That are Not Allowed in New England
Banned baby names are a real thing. In other words, if one of these names is on your list of possibilities, then think of this as a way to whittle your list down.
There are also rules that go along with naming your newborn in Massachusetts, New Hampshire, and Maine.
According to Vogue Magazine, feel free to be as unique as you want with names. Celebrities seem to go super strange at times, as you know. Just make sure your unique name isn't on this list.
First though, here are the rules you have to follow.
According to The Bump website, the combined length of the first, middle, and last names in New Hampshire is 100 characters.
In Maine, you don't have any restrictions except the nationally banned list, which I'll get to in a minute.
Meanwhile, Massachusetts only allows letters found on a standard English keyboard. This means if you were thinking of naming your baby ¦, «, or ±, then you're out of luck, but I'm guessing those aren't on your list.
Now for the list of names that are banned across the country, including right here in New England.
According to US Birth Certificates, you cannot name your baby the following.
- King
- Queen
- Jesus Christ
- III
- Santa Claus
- Majesty
- Misteri (insert the N-word here)
- Adolf Hitler
- Messiah
- @
- 1069
Some of these names are banned because of court cases initiated by a single person or parents, which led to a nationwide ban. You can read more about those in this article from The Huffington Post.
