Five people and a puppy were injured Thursday morning in a one-vehicle crash along the west side of the Cheshire Reservoir.

The Berkshire Eagle reports that according to police, the accident occurred about 11:30 a.m. on Old Cheshire Road, about a half-mile from the Cheshire town line.

The driver told police that the van's brakes failed as he was coming down the hill. The vehicle crossed over into the other lane and flipped on its side before landing in a culvert.

The driver and four passengers suffered minor injuries and were taken to Berkshire Medical Center in Pittsfield for treatment, according to police. The puppy suffered a cut on its head.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
