Pittsfield Police are investigating gunshots that were fired in a Westside neighborhood last night.

Josh Landes of WAMC reports that the City's Shotspotter system detected gunfire from six separate firearms in the alert, according to Lt. Michael Maddalena.

Investigators were seen searching for evidence, including bullet casings, in the area of Gilbert and Onota streets in Pittsfield, one block north of Columbus Avenue.

No injuries or damage to buildings have been discovered as of yet.
No other information was provided by police at this time, but we will continue to update the story as more information becomes available.

In late 2016 Pittsfield acquired Shotspotter technology which contains sensors that pick up on the sound of gunfire. Police receive digital alerts with address, latitude and longitude, the number of rounds fired, and type of gunfire within 45 seconds of a shooting.

In May of 2019, Pittsfield Police Chief Michael Wynn moved to expand the use of the Shotspotter technology saying at the point there had been 65 gunfire incidents since ShotSpotter was activated and 16 of those were not reported by citizens. Thirty-eight were both ShotSpotter and citizen calls and 11 were just citizen calls. He went on to say it has improved response time, investigations, and revealed a number of shootings officer wouldn't have known about at all.
