Woodlawn Avenue Fire Displaces 18

18 residents have been displaced after afternoon structure fire in Pittsfield Sunday.

The Pittsfield Fire Department responded to a report of a structure fire at 203 Woodlawn Avenue at approximately 1:45 pm on Sunday. Engines 2, 3 and 5 were dispatched along with the department’s Tower 1 and Car 2.

According to a media release from the department, Engine 2 arrived on scene and reported smoke and fire showing and that they were initiating an interior attack. Car 2 arrived on scene shortly after that and observed fire from three first floor windows extending up the building and into the second floor, threatening the third floor. Car 2 called for a second alarm bringing Engine 1 and 6 to the scene.

Engine 2, under the direction of Lt. R. Leary initiated an interior attack. The Engine 2 crew hit the fire room with a handline while putting there SCBA masks on. They then entered and made an aggressive attack stopping the main body of the fire. Engine 3 took another line to the second floor and quickly stopped the fire from extending further into the apartment. A third line was hoisted up to the third floor to stop minor extension. Other crews extinguished and removed burning/smoldering siding on the A and B sides for the building. Crews also completed primary and secondary search, ventilation, and salvage & overhaul operations.

The fire caused heavy fire, smoke, and water damage to the first floor AB side apartment. There was also smoke, fire, and water damage to the second and third floors AB side apartments. Moderate smoke damage occurred throughout the other 2 apartments.

There were no civilian or firefighter injuries as a result of the fire. The cause of the fire was not determined at the time of the media release.
