One of my favorite summer activities is swimming, particularly in lakes. When I was a kid, my parents would take me to a variety of lakes throughout Massachusetts, including the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) State Forest in Goshen, Windsor Lake in North Adams, but one particular place I loved swimming, perhaps my favorite, was Ashmere Lake (or Lake Ashmere if you prefer) in Hinsdale. That particular lake felt like mine, even though other people would be swimming there. Plus, I loved jumping off the dock. If a lake has a dock, count me in.

Ashmere Lake

Apparently, I'm not the only one who loves Ashmere Lake. The real estate website Movoto ranked the best lakes in Massachusetts for buying a vacation home, and Ashmere Lake ranks #3 (out of 10). Here's Movoto's review of Ashmere Lake:

Near the towns of Peru and Hinsdale, you won't find much if you venture this far from everything--but sometimes the lake life means soaking up nature without the hustle and bustle of large nearby towns. Lake Ashmere offers picturesque views, fantastic boating, and spectacular sunsets. There's a reason there are three summer camps located around its banks. It's truly a getaway.

I have to agree with Movoto's review of Ashmere Lake. Part of its appeal is the privacy and the seclusion it offers. It feels like another era, a simpler time if you will, which I certainly welcome in this age of where everything needs to be done yesterday.
